Everyone knows what Valentine’s Day is, but few people know why we celebrate it. It’s named after a Christian martyr and has origins in the Roman holiday named Lupercalia. Some stories suggest that Valentine’s Day came to be associated with romance after an imprisoned St. Valentine sent a letter to the girl with whom he fell in love. Another story is that it is celebrated to commemorate the anniversary of St. Valentine’s death. Another theory is that the church decided to convert the pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival of the Roman god of agriculture. That’s at least three different stories, not even counting the fact that there are at least three different St. Valentines that we know of.
While even experts may not exactly agree on where or how Valentine’s day came to be, what we do know is that it’s a day to make the people nearest and dearest to us feel special. Read on for some easy, simple, and inexpensive tips on how to do just that.
Don’t fuss about price
It’s easy to equate expensive gifts with more caring. You spent more money on it, it must mean more, right? Not necessarily! If you’ve ever gotten something unexpected, something sincere and heartfelt, then you know that the sticker price of a gift has little to do with how one can feel about it. A parent getting a simple homemade birthday or Christmas card from their son or daughter can treasure it far longer than they treasure a new gadget or jewelry. It’s easy enough to make something more meaningful, and that’s by…
Making it personal
Everyone craves to be thought of as special. Even something as simple as saying someone’s name can improve their impression of you. Making sure that the gift you give is tailored exactly to your recipient is the key to ensuring that they’ll appreciate it. Sure, the typical flowers-and-chocolate routine is appreciated as well, but does it really mean all that much by now? If everyone does it, does that make it special for the person who gets it? It’s gone from a sweet, romantic expression to something typical, almost mechanical – which is definitely not the kind of feeling you want to evoke on Valentine’s Day. No, what people want to know on Valentine’s is that they’re worth something, and that you went out of your way to let them know that. One more way to get that point across is to…
Make it about them, not you
This is the big one. Too often we give gifts that we think we would like, and we don’t even realize it. Giving a gift that really says something about your relationship with the recipient is the best and most foolproof way to ensure that they see how much you care about them. There are tons of ways to do this, and most of them don’t involve shelling out the kind of money you would usually need when buying your usual bouquet of flowers and box of chocolates. Perhaps a photo set with your most memorable moments, set into a personalized clock and photo frame. Doesn’t that show how you thought about your best times together as opposed to grabbing a gift off of a shelf?
