Michigan Basketball Leagues

Winter can be depressing. The gloomy skies and cold weather make people want to stay indoors. Outdoor activities are all but stopped on especially bad days. It’s a challenge for sports enthusiasts and those who want their kids to stay active to find something to do. At times like these, basketball becomes the ideal sport.

In fact, basketball was invented precisely as a way to keep people active during the winter months. Way back in December 1891, P.E. professor James Naismith of the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts (now Springfield College), came up with the game for an indoor alternative for his gym class. Back then, they used peach baskets and soccer balls.

We have come a long way since then. On TV alone, an average of 15.5 million people watch the NBA finals in the U.S. They have almost 4 million Twitter followers, and over 20 million Facebook fans. The NBA’s annual revenues are just shy of $5 billion. The average NBA team is now worth $1.1 billion, with the LA Lakers leading the bunch at $2.6 billion. There are of course also numerous and highly popular college and high school basketball teams and leagues. They serve as the breeding ground for recruitment into the NBA.

During the off-season, for those who don’t really want to go pro or semi-pro or for those who want to play just for fun and camaraderie, there are many neighborhood leagues as well. These range from elementary age leagues to the likes of Lansing’s Adult 50+ Basketball League. You can even set up your own league if you have enough people willing to join. After all, you don’t have to be Kevin Durant to have a sport you can enjoy even in the winter.

Starting or participating in a sports league is always a worthy endeavor, and basketball is no exception. There are the obvious physical benefits of losing weight, getting fit, and staying healthy. Sports also help you feel better emotionally and sleep better. Another plus is that team sports are a great way to nurture relationships among family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

Proper incentives

The prizes at the end are a great incentive to reward the players who participated and gave their all to improve. There’s no denying or underestimating that a prize worthy of the effort makes the entire undertaking more enjoyable all around. Having a bookshelf to proudly display your trophies as you grow up is a time honored American tradition. If you are in an adult league you can even have some fun with it giving out gag medals and trophies to ‘honor’ some of the teams who did less than well in the league. Whether you need kids, adults, or blooper awards Great Lakes Trophies has you covered.
