August is National Golf Month! Being in the great State of Michigan, we have some of the highest ranked and most awarded golf courses in the country. In celebration of these facts and of the sport as a whole, here are the why’s and how’s of planning a successful golf outing in Michigan.
Playing golf has many varied and far reaching benefits for you. The physical aspect is an obvious one. All that walking around large green spaces with lots of fresh air will do wonders for your health. Some of the benefits of golf include healthier lungs and heart, lower cholesterol, less chance of diabetes and cancer, stronger bones, and even better sleep. In fact, a study by Karolinska Intitutet in Sweden found that golfers lived around 40% longer than non-golfers! Unlike many other sports, you also stand very little chance of injury when playing golf.
Golf is also a strongly mental game. It involves a lot of logic and strategy as to the clubs to use, the direction to aim, and many other factors such as the wind, the contour of the land, and even the direction in which the grass is growing. Being a game of such concentration where noise is frowned upon, golf also often gets players into a state of deep meditation.
Although golf can be played alone, its social benefits are widely known. It gives you the opportunity to have long discussions and strolls with the people you play with, while also keeping everyone from otherwise getting bored. Golf is so effective at building social bonds and networks that USA Today came out with an article about golf being an essential tool for business, with about 80% of students taking up golf at Penn State University being business students.
Planning a golf outing can be a logistical challenge due to the sheer size of the venue and the number of people usually involved. Thus, it is important to put in the necessary time and effort to plan the event thoroughly.
The format is usually one of the first considerations. Unless many of the players are actually quite good at golf, the usual format used is the Scramble. For this format, players are grouped into four, and each player takes a shot. They then decide which one was best, and hit their next shots from there. This also moves the game along faster, as there is much less need to hit bad shots out of sand traps and other obstacles.
The number of players can vary and you will usually want to get as many as you can. However, for an 18-hole course, it may become messy with any number over 140.
The venue is, of course, another point to handle early on as you will likely need to reserve well in advance and close the course up to over four hours before and after the event.
Seeking corporate sponsorship should be done well in advance to ensure everything gets covered. You could actually make a significant profit from your event. It is standard practice to offer different levels of sponsorship, such as platinum, gold, silver, and bronze. Each level comes with a corresponding exposure to the company’s logo. For example, bronze could be the smallest ad size in the pamphlets to be handed out, while platinum could be banners throughout the course and on the winners’ trophies.
Speaking of the trophies, also keep in mind that a golf outing is often expected to be a cultured and costly affair, sponsored by businesses that want their brand to look its best. This means that the quality of all materials used and presented during the event should be taken into consideration. This is especially true of the awards, as they are meant to be displayed for posterity.
